MECIT LIbrary

MECIT has its brand new library building which was inaugurated in Spring 2010. The library is well equipped with a strong collection of 25,000 books comprising of text books, reference books, general books on various topics, periodicals, audio visual materials and scientific journals. 

The new two floored state of art building comprises of two reading areas with an area of 2400 sq meters each with a seating capacity of 310. The ground floor is equipped with a large reading room with a capacity of 150 users and facilities like periodicals and circulations section and reference sections.

In addition to the reading room, the first floor has modern facilities like an Audio visual section, book stacks, faculty research section, reading carrels and country specific section.

All current members (Students, Staff & Faculty Members) of the MECIT may use the library for reference and study.  Guests may also use the library for reference only with permission from the Librarian.

All members of the College, including Faculty, staff or students, full or part-time, are entitled to borrow library items.  

Library Facilities

FACILITIES AT MECIT LIBRARY

Audio visual section
One of the most attractive facilities at MECIT library is its audiovisual section. The section has a seating capacity of 30 and with equipments of state-of-the art technology. The section acquires and holds large collection of audiovisual tapes, DVDs, CDs, Audio cassettes related with various academic subjects.

Conference/Discussion Rooms
Five discussion rooms are provided in the ground floor of the library with a capacity of 10 users each. these rooms can be used by students in case of requirement and students are required to reserve the room as per the library policies.

Internet Facility
Computer terminals with internet connections have been provided on both the floors of the library. These terminals are intended as OPAC search counters. Additionally Wi-Fi facility is also available in the library which the students can use to connect their laptops or smart phones to the Internet.

Photocopying Facility
Photocopiers are provided in the library. Students can use this facility for photocopying books and other resources available in the library. A prepaid card is required to use this facility which is available at MECIT.

Services

Library Circulation Services

The Circulation Services desk is located on the ground floor of the library near entrance. All library issuable items can be borrowed from here as per guidelines and entitlement of a member as given in library policies. A book can be borrowed, renewed or reserved at this desk.

Online Catalogue Search:
Library catalogue search service is being offered through the college intranet site, CIS. The catalogue lists everything in the MECIT Library, showing all the details of the item that the user is searching for, like the author name, ISBN number, location of the item in the library, number of available copies etc. The catalogue search also gives the user an option to reserve the book of his choice.

Awareness Service:
Library is offering a weekly awareness service in the form of Library Bulletins, in which all users at MECIT are informed by emails about the newly received periodicals during the previous week.

New arrivals display:
All newly arrived items are displayed near the entry point of the library.

Library Guidelines

  • Access to the MECIT Library is restricted to Faculty members, staff and students of the college and to such other persons as may be authorized by the Librarian.
  • Students are required to carry their College Identity card and staff to carry their College staff identity card to gain entry and to use the Library.
  • Appropriate behaviour is required in all parts of the Library. Silence must be observed in the library. The use of mobile phones in the Library is prohibited. Phones should either be switched off or set to silent ring mode. Students failing to comply with this requirement or who behave inappropriately in the library will be asked to leave the Library immediately. Any subsequent incidents will be referred to the Dean/ Academic Support Manager for consideration within the terms of the appropriate college disciplinary procedures.
  • Consumption of food and drink is not allowed in the Library. Anyone entering with food and/or drink may be refused admission.
  • The use of personal audio equipment is not permitted in the Library. Photography, filming, video-taping and audio-taping in the Library is not allowed without the prior permission of the Librarian.
  • Use of internet is allowed for educational and project works only.
  • A student is allowed to borrow 3 library items at a time for 2 weeks and that can be renewed for two more terms of 2 weeks.
  • A fine of RO 0.100 per day would be charged on overdue items. If fines are outstanding, borrowing rights may be withdrawn until such time as those fines are paid.
  • The Library communicates mostly by e-mail, sending overdue, recall and reservation etc., to a student's official college e-mail address. It is the responsibility of student to check regularly for these messages.
  • Users are responsible for materials borrowed in their name and for its return by the due date.
  • In case of loss of library items, borrower will be required to replace the item or pay the cost in double.
  • Library may refuse to accept a damaged book and the borrower will have to replace the book.
  • The registration to the next semester or award of degree/diploma may be deferred until all books have been returned and outstanding fines/charges paid.
  • Students are strictly prohibited to write or mark on any library book, periodical, newspaper or on tables. A fine may be imposed if any student found in violation.

Library Discipline

Library is provided with Closed Circuit cameras, and all movements of library visitors are monitored.  Any student found in indulging indiscipline, will be reported to Disciplinary Committee of MECIT for appropriate action.
Checking out books: 
Books are allowed to be checked out by MECIT students, faculty, and staff using their College ID Cards.

Returning Books: 
All library materials may be returned to Library during operating hours.

Renewing Books:   
Books may be renewed by accessing CIS Library module or by e-mail to library staff

Recalling Books: 
MECIT Library may request books to be returned after a minimum usage of 2 weeks, or immediately if needed.  Borrower will be notified by email of new due date. Fines begin accruing on the 4th day after the due date.  

Fine Policy: 
Borrowers are given 3 days grace period past the due date to return books without paying fines. On the 4th day overdue, fines are assessed at RO 0. 100 per book per day.  Students will be blocked for issuing of books and other materials if fine is not paid or overdue books are not returned.

Loss of Books: 
In case of loss of books reported by student, either it should be replaced by student or pay double cost of the book.

Damage/Mutilation:

Library will not accept return of a book if it is damaged by the student or found written notes or comments etc on a book.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can I make a phone or e-mail request to have books or articles sent from the MECIT Library to my location? 

We do not offer this service. 

2. Can I ask the MECIT Library staff for help if I need help to find information for my project or assignments? 

Certainly. You may contact library staff and seek help

3. If I am on campus, can I check out books from the library?

Certainly.  Please note, however, that regular due dates apply.  While you can renew a book, you are responsible to get it back to the library safely and on time. 

4. Can I use the services of other libraries in Muscat?

Certainly. You can use the library services of almost all private colleges and universities of Muscat including Sultan Qaboos University although the borrowing of library items are restricted.
